Protect Your Eyes From Harmful Rays This UV Safety Month

July isn’t just about welcoming the warm embrace of summer in Chino, CA. It’s also UV Safety Month, an important time to discuss and dissect the effects of UV rays on our eyes and the crucial steps we must take to protect them. In this post, we discuss the potential risks of long-term sun exposure and how to safeguard our vision against the harmful effects of UV rays.

The Risk of UV Exposure

Studies backed by the American Academy of Ophthalmology have illustrated that prolonged exposure to bright sunlight can elevate the risk of developing cataracts and various growths on the eye, some of which could be cancerous. Moreover, UV rays reflected off surfaces like sand and water could lead to photokeratitis, a sunburn of the eye, which might cause temporary blindness within a few hours of exposure. Given these risks, acknowledging UV safety’s significance is invaluable, particularly during July, when UV levels peak.

Effective Protection Against UV Rays

While soaking in the sun has its joys, protecting our eyes from UV damage is imperative. Experts recommend wearing sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection. It’s a common misconception that the darkness of the sunglasses’ tint correlates to their protective ability, which is not necessarily true. Regardless of the color or cost, ensuring your sunglasses block 100% of UVA and UVB rays is crucial. Opting for wrap-around styles can also provide additional protection by blocking rays that might enter from the sides.

Additionally, donning a broad-brimmed hat can further shield your eyes and the delicate skin around them from UV damage. It’s also worth noting that cloud coverage does not equate to UV protection; harmful rays can penetrate through haze and clouds, underscoring the importance of wearing sunglasses even on overcast days.

UV Protection Isn’t Just for Adults

Children are at risk too, making it paramount to protect their eyes whenever they’re outdoors. Encouraging kids to wear hats and sunglasses and scheduling outdoor activities outside the peak UV periods (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) can significantly reduce their exposure to harmful rays. Regular eye exams play a vital role in maintaining ocular health for all ages, aiding in the early detection and treatment of potential eye conditions that could be exacerbated by UV exposure.

Commit to Regular Eye Exams

In line with recommendations from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, it’s best to adhere to regular eye examination schedules. Children with a family history of vision problems and adults over the age of 40 should have their eyes examined regularly to screen for any changes or problems that might arise from continued UV exposure.
